About Miguel…

Graduated in Architecture from the Technical University at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon in 1993, Miguel Lopes began his professional career while still completing his degree in the studio of Architect João Paciência, where he participated in various projects and competitions as part of multidisciplinary teams.

He collaborated with the studio of Frederico Valsassina for 28 years, between 1997 and 2023, where he participated in and developed projects, coordinating teams through processes of varying complexity, from architectural competitions to the development of different project phases and the supervision of construction until final completion. He is highly versatile in the field of projects and construction across a wide range of sectors, including sports facilities, commercial buildings, office buildings, residential complexes, and hospitality projects, among others. Notable works include:

  • Olympic Swimming Pool Complex for the University Stadium of Lisbon and the Olympic Swimming Pool Complex for the 10th African Games in Maputo
  • EUL Tennis Center
  • The most recent Surf Park in Óbidos

In commercial complexes, he contributed to various expansions of the Braga Parque Shopping Center; in assisted living residences for the Mello Group in Parede, Junqueira, and Parque das Nações, as well as in Oeiras for ACP;

In residential architecture, he has worked with numerous national and international developers and investors on projects such as buildings at Praça de Espanha, the residential complex “Lote 3” at Belas Clube de Campo, Casal de Santa Luzia in Estefânia, Villa Infante on Av. Infante Santo, Av. 5 de Outubro 271, Rua Rodrigo da Fonseca 11 (The Nest), Artilharia Um 33 (Mulberry Hill), Rua Gomes Freire 18 (Scenic), Rua Silva Carvalho 32, Rua de São Mamede 25, Calçadinha dos Olivais, and Av. Julius Nyerere in Maputo.

In the hospitality sector, his projects include Hotel Serra da Chela and Hotel Belas Business in Angola, The Largo Hotel in Porto (5*), Hotel Lumen (5*), Tagus Square / NH Hotel (5*) in Lisbon, and buildings at Fontes Pereira de Melo 18–26 for the Sana Group.

In the office sector, his work includes the building at Alameda dos Oceanos 117, the CTT building in Parque das Nações, RTP headquarters in Lisbon, Novartis headquarters at Tagus Park, and the Brisa toll plaza buildings and squares in Maia and Ermesinde.

He believes that technology is essentially a tool to assist the creative process and that every project is an excellent challenge for exploring form and function in pursuit of a coherent and integrated outcome, always with a focus on aesthetic quality.

A competitive sailor from the age of 13 to 30, holding a Coastal Skipper license and having taught recreational sailing courses for three years, he has consistently stood out for his discipline, professionalism, and ability to overcome challenges through persistence and hard work. He remains closely connected to the sea and various nautical activities.
